Step-by-Step Guide

Set up

  • Use one single rope sized to you: stand with both feet in the centre of the rope holding the handles and the handles should sit just below the shoulders (a slightly long rope is shortened with a knot or two at each end just below the handle). Mark one straight line flat on a clear floor and stand with the feet together just to one side of it.
  • Hold one handle in each hand with the hands low in front of the body and the rope resting on the back of the ankles (the starting position), then take the elbows and wrists back in a circular motion to turn the rope overhead, keeping the arms down low at the sides; jump only as the rope nears the feet - the timing rule. The unroped rehearsal is a progression, not the roped skill.
  1. A woman with a jump rope facing the camera, feet together on one side of a taped floor line, up on the balls of her feet with the rope arcing overhead.

    Step 1 of 3

Stand on the balls of your feet, just to the right of a line on the floor. Keep your feet together and turn the rope overhead with your wrists.

  2. The same woman just landed on the other side of the taped line, feet together on the balls of her feet, the rope lying low in front of her toes.

    Step 2 of 3

Hop sideways over the line as the rope reaches your feet. Land softly on the balls of both feet.

  3. A woman with a jump rope facing the camera, feet together on one side of a taped floor line, up on the balls of her feet with the rope arcing overhead.

    Step 3 of 3

Hop back over the line to the right side, feet together, and keep turning the rope.

Form Cues

  • Stay on the balls of your feet
  • Keep your hops small
  • Turn the rope from your wrists
  • Keep your elbows close

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Jumping too high
  • Landing flat and hard
  • Turning the rope with the whole arm
  • Jumping before the rope is near your feet
